Current Events for US History, Government, and Civics Classrooms

Current events are news stories that explore a variety of topics relevant to U.S. History, Government, and Civics classrooms. Each week the Bill of Rights Institute searches contemporary news articles for those that highlight important themes in these classes and connect them to BRI resources. This week we examine signs of India pushback against Trump tariffs, new evidence of a hardening line on Russia from President Trump, and a major arms deal between Poland and South Korea that could further strengthen China’s influence in Europe.

A tetrad of four consecutive lunar eclipses that occurred in 2014 and 2015 may signal the beginning of the Messianic End Times, according to this conspiracy theory. This evangelist claimed that the Rapture would happen in this year, even though his previous predictions had failed. The founder of this religious movement claimed that a comet was trailing Hale-Bopp and that only those who gathered in certain places around the world could be pulled to safety. When his prediction failed, Applewhite and 38 of his followers committed suicide.
